Abortion in Turkey

There are different options for terminating a pregnancy. The selecting method is determined by the duration of the pregnancy, medical history and the individual preference of the patient. Options are increasingly limited, the latter the gestation. Early abortions can be performed in a few different ways.

In Turkey abortion is legal for up to 10 weeks of pregnancy. Abortion pills (the medical abortion) are illegal. There is more than one kind of in-clinic abortion procedure available to patients.

The Aspiration Method

The most common is called the aspiration method. It is also known as vacuum aspiration. Aspiration can usually be performed up to 10 weeks after a woman’s last period. With this method, a tube is used to remove the pregnancy from the lining of the uterus. It is performed by using a hand held suction device that creates enough suction to gently remove the embryonic tissue through a very thin tube and empty the uterus. Developments in ultrasound technology make it possible to do procedures this early without the increased risk of a missed abortion.

When you come into our facility one of our counsellors will explain all aspects of the abortion procedure and answer any questions you may have. You will then need to confirm that you are clear in your decision to end your pregnancy.

Following the abortion procedure you will be taken to the recovery area. When you wake up you will not remember much, you may have some light cramping for about 10 to 15 minutes, if it continues the nurse will be happy to give you pain relief to help with any discomfort. Light cramping is to be expected as the uterus must return back to normal size. You will remain in the recovery area for about 30 minutes. First trimester abortion is one of the safest procedures and approximately 9-10 times safer than normal child birth.

When can a first trimester abortion be performed?

A first trimester abortion can be performed immediately after a pregnancy is confirmed, typically around 4.5 weeks from the first day of the patient’s last missed period at the earliest. Manual vacuum aspiration is the safest method and can be legally performed in Turkey up to 10 weeks from the first day of the patient’s last period.

What is the preparation process for abortion?

First, Dr. NOAH will verify the pregnancy using ultrasound. This allows for accurate dating and also allows the doctor to look for any medical issues that could impact the abortion. Patients can select the anaesthesia they prefer. There are three types: general anaesthesia, conscious sedation or local anaesthesia. The majority of patients opt for general anaesthesia, as it allows them to sleep through the procedure. In conscious sedation, the patient will be awake but may doze lightly during the abortion due to sedatives.

What method is used for abortion?

A vacuum aspiration is used for first trimester abortions. In a vacuum aspiration, the cervix will be dilated to a small degree (3-4 mm) so a tiny suction tube can be inserted. The uterus will be emptied into this suction tube, and the tube is removed with no need for stitches.

 

What is the recovery process after a first trimester abortion?

Following a first trimester abortion, patients are able to rest quietly in a private recovery area. Dr. Noah will administer any medication needed during and after the abortion. Most patients are in the office for a total of about 2 hours, including the recovery period.
Patients should arrange for a friend or family member to drive them home after the procedure. Some bleeding and cramping after the procedure is normal. Patients can typically go back to their regular schedule the day after the procedure.
